It took longer to make their way back into the city than it did to get out of it. Trap had stopped for coffee on the way and paid for a biscuit for Hondo, her form of an apology.

As they pulled out of the parking lot for the fast-food restaurant, they headed South toward the address for Silva’s residence.

“How long you been partners with Blackwater?” Hondo asked, chewing his biscuit.

“Nine years now.”

“Would’ve guessed less. You don’t seem to mix.”

“We mixed alright in the beginning. First couple years, we worked well together. He was even gonna run for Sheriff… Then he lost his footing. Used to be in AA and he slipped. Wasn’t the same person.”

“Sorry to hear.”

“Don’t be sorry for me. I didn’t have kids with him. It’s his wife I’m sorry for. And his two boys.”

“Didn’t realize he had children,” Hondo said. “Doesn’t have pictures on his desk.”

“No,” Trap said, sipping her coffee. “Hard to feed your addiction when your kids’ faces are staring at you.”

“Damn shame.”

“Exactly what he needs more of.”

“What about you?” Hondo asked. “Kids?”

“Me? No… never.”

“Why?”

Trap sighed and took a sharp right turn onto a residential street. “Never made sense to me.”

“What didn’t make sense?”

“Bringing life into a world that’s ruled by death.”

Hondo couldn’t think of a response. Turning to look out his passenger window, he watched the world wipe past in a blurry blaze of buildings and vehicles and flesh.

“Sorry to be a downer,” Trap added.

“No,” Hondo said. “I agree.”

“Then why the adoption agency?” Trap wondered aloud. “I mean… Don’t answer if I’m crossing a line.”

Hondo thought about it, and not for the first time. “Adoption isn’t bringing a kid into the world,” he’d decided. “It’s saving them from it.”
